CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER SMITH DEATH UPDATE

THE NEWS AT WBBM 780 is now reporting that the driver of the SUV who fled the scene and mingled in with the crowd, actually cut off Officer Smith while he was on his motorcycle.

The person in the van, came back, pretending to be part of the crowd. That's when a witness pointed out the driver and police arrested the person.

When the collision happened, a Cook County Sheriff's police officer was behind Smith at the intersection. The officer wrote down both license plate numbers, then the driver of the car was also arrested.

"I'm so grateful to those people who were on the scene, to help apprehend them, because had they not been there, this person probably would have gone scott-free and thought nothing else about it," said Rivers-Smith.
